Awe Postcard (A6)

PSALMS 19:1 — "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork."

Awe draws from Psalm 19's meditation on the heavens — the way the sky speaks without words, and the way God's light reaches from one end of it to the other.

A single figure stands among churning waves, looking upward into a sky that sweeps open in broad, flowing bands of light. The psalm describes the sun coming out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, running its course with joy, its rising from one end of the heavens and its circuit to the other, with nothing hidden from its heat. The sky here carries that same sense of movement and reach — light that doesn't sit still but pours outward.

The waves below are heavy and restless, curling in on themselves. But the figure isn't turned away from them. They're looking up. Whatever is underfoot, the heavens are still declaring. 

The piece is rendered in a single tonal range — sepia and cream — so that the light in the sky reads   through openness and the weight of the sea reads through density of line.
