Psalm 23
PSALM 23:2 - "He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters."
Psalm 23 interprets the shepherd's care through a quiet landscape of guidance, provision, and stillness.
The scene opens onto rolling hills under a wide, painted sky — a landscape of rest, seen through the shepherd psalm. A stream winds through the foreground and back into the distance, with no visible beginning or end, drawn from the image of living water that never runs dry. In Hebrew, the phrase "still waters" — mee menuchoth — doesn't mean motionless water, but restful waters, waters of refreshment. The stream here carries that sense: moving, but gentle.
A shepherd sits beneath a tree with sheep resting beside him, the psalm's opening verses made visible. And in the distant hills, a small house among the cypresses points to the psalm's closing line — "I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever."
The palette draws from the richness of the passage itself: deep golds and greens for pastures that feel abundant, warm pinks across the sky, and deep blues where the water gathers in the reeds.
