Be Still Postcard (A6)
PSALMS 46:10 — "Be still, and know that I am God."
Be Still draws on the biblical image of the sea as a place of chaos — waters that roar and foam, forces too large to overcome by effort alone — and sets the verse's command in the middle of it.
Massive waves fill the frame on both sides, curling and churning in dense, heavy forms. But through the centre, a channel of gentle water runs from one end of the piece to the other, drawn in calm, flowing lines. A small boat sits in that channel, carrying a single figure. The waves tower over it. The boat has no power against them — and it doesn't need any. The figure isn't rowing. They're being carried.
Psalm 46 opens with a God who is refuge and strength even as the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea. "Be still" is not an instruction to feel calm. It's a call to trust the one who makes a path through waters that no amount of striving could part on its own.
